![]() ![]() Elk behave a bit like white-tailed deer they stay close to cover and are extra careful. Rugged coastal valleys and misty mountain slopes are home to this majestic big game animal. Elk prefer being in remote areas, away from road access and the accompanying negative human activity. Taking the time to understand where you are hunting can pay off in spades when the elk are not bugling and are hard to locate. Elk hunting is considered a challenging sport during hunting season because big game such as elk has a very specific habitat. A mature bull (Male elk) can weigh over 500 km (1000 pounds), and a cow (Female elk) about two-thirds that size. Among all other species, Roosevelt elk are larger in size with larger and more rugged antlers. The University of Victoria estimates that approximately 3,200 Roosevelt elk exist in BC, and its number on Vancouver Island is about 3,000. Roosevelt elk (Roosies, as the locals know them) are indigenous to Vancouver Island, and they are the only species that can be found on the island. Four subspecies of elk inhabit North America, and two of them live in British Columbia Roosevelt elk and Rocky Mountain elk (with lighter-coloured than their bigger-bodied cousin, the Roosevelt elk). Over several decades, harvests have ranged from 500 to 4000 animals per year. Where turkey and deer hunting are permitted, use of slugs and shot containing lead to hunt these species is permitted, unless prohibited by refuge-specific regulations and/or state law.Elks are important game animals in British Columbia, prized for their meat and antlers. The field is defined as Waterfowl Production Areas or certain other areas of the National Wildlife Refuge System as delineated on maps, leaflets and/or signs available at each refuge headquarters or posted at each refuge, or as stated in refuge-specific regulations. Hunters may possess only approved nontoxic shot - as identified in 50 CFR 20.21(j) - while in the field. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited. (Baiting is authorized in Alaska, in accordance with state regulations on refuges.) Use of nails, wire, screws or bolts to attach a stand to a tree, or hunting from a tree into which a metal object has been driven to support a hunter, is prohibited. Unauthorized distribution of bait and hunting over bait is prohibited. Archers may not have arrows with such drugs in their possession. Use of any drug on any arrow for bow hunting is prohibited. In addition, refuge-specific hunting regulations for migratory game bird, upland game and big game hunting appear in CFR 50 32.20 through 32.72. Regulations, special conditions and maps of hunting areas are available at the refuge's headquarters. All hunters must comply with refuge-specific regulations governing hunting. All hunters must comply with the terms and conditions authorizing access or use of refuges, including the terms and conditions under which hunting permits are issued. All hunters must comply with current Federal Migratory Bird Regulations. All hunters 16 years or older must possess a Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp while hunting migratory waterfowl.
